Multi-Engine Sea Rating (MES)

Single engine pilots want to go multi, multi's want jets... so it only makes sense that Single Engine Sea (SES) pilots would want to be Multi Engine Sea (MES) pilots.

The Best Approach

Since the Multi Engine Sea (MES) is fundamentally a combination of Multi Engine Land (MEL) and Single Engine Sea (SES) ratings, the best way to approach an MES rating is to acquire your MEL and SES.  Although it's not required it will certainly make the processes easier and enable you to be well prepared for the challenges.

One Down One To Go

Any pilot will tell you that one of the most difficult tasks for any multi-engine aircraft is flying with one engine down.  This problem does more than just remove power it also upsets that balance that was designed into the aicraft.  Since the speeds in most sea and float planes are lower the single engine issue becomes more pronounced.

Taxiing

A multi-engine seaplane can give the pilot quite a bit more control on the water.  The ability to utilize each engine independantly allows the pilot more choices over direction.  The impact of wind and most current conditions can be overcome due to the extra amount of control.

Hulls vs. Floats

With a Singel Engine SeaPlan you will usually be dealing with floats.  With a multi-engine seaplanes, most are basically flying boats.  This distinction gives the MES pilot a few differences to understand.  Handling in the water, visibility due to sitting lower in the water and take off and landings are all a new experience with a hull.  You may find that you will never want to go back to a single engine seaplane with floats once you've master a multi engine with a hull.
